Delhi Ready for Badminton Worlds After Venue Overhaul
New Delhi is set to host the BWF World Championships from August 17 to 23 at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, with organisers assuring that issues seen during the India Open earlier this year have been addressed. The Badminton World Federation (BWF) and the Badminton Association of India (BAI) said preparations are on track, with improvements made to ensure a smooth experience for players and fans.
The India Open in January drew criticism after players raised concerns over bird droppings on the court, stray animals entering the venue, and poor air quality. In response, organisers have upgraded the venue by inspecting and waterproofing the roof, testing the air-conditioning system, improving lighting, and introducing stricter animal-control measures, including triple-door entry systems, sealed access points, and enhanced security.
BWF Secretary General Thomas Lund expressed confidence that the necessary measures are in place, noting that Delhi’s monsoon season also brings better air quality than winter. The tournament will feature defending champions Shi Yu Qi of China and Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi, while India’s PV Sindhu will lead the home challenge in the women’s singles.
