Congress president visits jailed former Finance Minister in Tihar jail
Congress president Sonia Gandhi has visited former Finance Minister P Chidambaram, who was recently booked by the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Enforcement Directorate in connection with corruption charges, and who is at present in Tihar jail.
Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is also a financial expert like the jailed former Finance Minister, has also accompanied the Congress president when she has visited the leader in jail.
Earlier, last week, leader of the opposition in the Upper House of the Indian Parliament Ghulam Nabi Azad and veteran Congress leader Ahmed Patel visited the jailed Congress leader.
The leader has denounced all charges registered against him by the investigative agencies. His party has also supported the stand taken by him in the issue. It has termed the charges as ‘politically motivated’.
Mr Chidambaram is one of the senior leaders in the Grand Old Party. The corruption charges levelled against the leader has adversely affected the image of one of the oldest political parties in the country.
The party has called the charges as an attempt to tarnish the image of its senior political leader. The party has questioned the grounds over which the charges have been framed against the former Cabinet minister.
Anyway, it is unfortunate that the party which ruled the country for more than sixty years only see a political angle in this issue. That itself shows how far it has gone away from its true core.
