China Escalates Trade Tensions With India at WTO Over Solar and It Goods

China has formally initiated a trade dispute with India at the World Trade Organization (WTO), challenging New Delhi’s trade measures on solar cells, solar modules, and information technology goods. Beijing alleges that India’s tariff policies and certain incentives — particularly those contingent on domestic inputs — discriminate against Chinese imports and violate international trade rules.

China contends that India’s support measures, including conditions tied to its Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for solar manufacturing and elevated tariffs on certain tech products, contravene provisions of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade and other WTO agreements. The consultations represent the first formal step in the dispute process, allowing both sides to seek a negotiated resolution.

This move comes amid rising trade frictions: earlier this month India imposed five‑year anti‑dumping duties on cold‑rolled steel imports from China to protect its domestic steel industry. The escalating trade actions highlight growing economic tensions between Asia’s two largest neighbours as they balance domestic industry goals with global trade commitments.
