ChatGPT Launches Global Group Chats for Collaborative Conversations
OpenAI has officially rolled out a new Group Chats feature to ChatGPT users across all plans—Free, Go, Plus, and Pro—transforming the platform from a one-to-one AI assistant into a collaborative shared space. After testing in select regions including Japan and New Zealand, the feature is now available worldwide, enabling users to work together on planning, writing, research, debate and more within a single conversation.
The update allows up to 20 participants to join a group once they accept an invitation. Users can create groups by tapping the people icon and adding contacts or sharing an invite link. Each person sets up a short profile with a name, username and photo, while personal settings and memory remain private. OpenAI says ChatGPT can understand when to participate actively or step back, and users can tag the model directly for input or request summaries and suggestions.
OpenAI sees the feature as a major step toward making ChatGPT a more social and collaborative tool. The rollout follows the launch of GPT 5.1, available in both Instant and Thinking modes, and the release of Sora, a new app for generating and sharing AI-powered short videos. The company says it envisions ChatGPT becoming an essential assistant for real-time teamwork, problem-solving and creative collaboration around the world.
