Centre May Call Special Parliament Session on Women’s Reservation, Delimitation
The Centre is likely to convene a special session of Parliament later this month to discuss constitutional amendment bills related to delimitation and women’s reservation. The move comes amid rising political tensions over electoral roll revisions and protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Government sources say the Centre is reaching out to Opposition parties to secure support for the proposed bills.
The government had suffered a setback during the Budget Session on April 17, when a constitutional amendment bill linked to delimitation and the implementation of women’s reservation in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies was defeated. Passing a constitutional amendment requires a special majority, and the NDA currently falls short of the two-thirds majority needed in the Lok Sabha, despite having a numerical advantage.
According to sources, the Centre is in discussions with the DMK and smaller Opposition parties to strengthen its numbers ahead of a possible vote. The timing of the special sitting may be influenced by the 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum, scheduled for October 26 and 27 in New Delhi. Sources indicated that around a week’s notice could be given before the session is convened.
