BMW Plans 10 New Launches and Increased Local Sourcing to Boost Luxury and EV Sales in India

BMW will introduce 10 new cars, including electric vehicles (EVs) and MINI models, in India this year, alongside 17 product upgrades, as it aims to expand its presence in the country’s luxury car segment. India CEO Hardeep Brar said over a third of the new launches will be under the MINI brand, targeting growth beyond the current 1% share of luxury vehicles in the market. BMW sold a record 18,000 cars in India in 2025, up 14% from the previous year, closing in on market leader Mercedes-Benz.

To make luxury cars more affordable and expand sales, BMW plans to increase local sourcing of parts, which currently stands at around 50%, covering seats, engines, axles, and tyres. The company’s first locally assembled EV, the iX1, helped price it competitively and drove clean car sales up by 200%. EVs now account for 21% of BMW’s India sales, up from 8% in 2024, prompting the company to explore local production of EV components like motors to further reduce costs.

Brar emphasized the need for long-term government support for EVs, as luxury EV penetration in India is around 10%, compared to 4% overall. He urged maintaining the current 5% EV tax rate, significantly lower than the 40%+ applied to gasoline vehicles, to ensure sustainable growth and continued investment in the clean car segment.
