BJP Set To Keep Nagaland, Tripura, C Sangma Short Of Majority In Meghalaya
In Tripura and Nagaland, where ballots for assembly elections are being counted today, the BJP and its allies appear poised to prevail. With Conrad Sangma’s party leading the pack, Meghalaya appears to be headed for a hung assembly.
On 34 of Tripura’s 60 seats, the BJP and its ally IPFT (Indigenous Progressive Front of Tripura) are in the lead. Nonetheless, the result is 10 points lower than in 2018, when the BJP alone won 36 seats. The IPFT had eight victories.
In contrast to Chief Minister Manik Saha’s predictions of a “tsunami,” the BJP is currently in the lead with 28 seats. When questioned about the situation, Mr. Saha responded that the party “would have to reflect on why the results fell short of expectations.
The Left, which ruled the state for 35 years, and its new ally Congress, are leading on 14 seats, down by two.Tipra Motha, a new candidate in this election from the former royal Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, is in the lead with 12 seats. The party, which advocates for a Greater Tipraland, appears to have won the support of the tribal members of the IPFT.
Conrad Sangma’s National People’s Party, which headed the governing coalition with the BJP in Meghalaya, ran unopposed this time and won 26 of the state’s 60 seats. To attain the majority threshold, it needs at least five more. The BJP, which is in the lead on five seats, may know the solution. The BJP and its ally, the NDPP (Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party), are in the lead in Nagaland with 38 seats, eight more than the previous round. The state now has its first female Legislator since Independence.
