BJP and Congress Clash Over US Bribery Allegations Against Gautam Adani
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a sharp counterattack against the Congress party following its criticisms over recent bribery allegations against industrialist Gautam Adani. US prosecutors have accused Adani and his associates of a $265 million bribery and fraud scheme linked to solar energy contracts. BJP IT head Amit Malviya questioned the timing of the indictment, suggesting it aligns with significant political events, such as the Indian Parliament session and debates surrounding former US President Donald Trump. Malviya dismissed Congress leader Jairam Ramesh’s calls for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe, arguing that Congress and opposition-ruled states like Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh were in power during the alleged bribery period.
Congress has consistently accused the BJP of fostering close ties with the Adani Group, alleging undue favors in the energy sector. Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly highlighted what he calls the “Modani scams,” suggesting corruption links between Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government and Adani. However, the BJP has refuted these claims, emphasizing that the Adani Group operates across both opposition- and BJP-ruled states. The party maintained that the charges against Adani are allegations requiring legal proof and criticized Congress for aligning with foreign entities, including financier George Soros, potentially undermining India’s sovereignty.
The allegations have intensified political rivalries, with Congress pushing for accountability and the BJP defending its stance. The indictment details claims that Adani and associates paid over $250 million in bribes to secure favorable solar power contracts worth $2 billion in profits. As the legal proceedings in the US unfold, the issue is expected to remain a central point in India’s political discourse, impacting both domestic and international relations.
