Bharat Taxi Launches in Delhi-NCR, Promises Cheaper Rides with Cooperative Model

Bharat Taxi officially launches in Delhi-NCR today, with Union Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah set to flag off the government-backed ride-hailing app at 3 pm. The launch marks the first phase of a nationwide rollout. Positioned as a cooperative-led alternative to private cab aggregators like Uber and Ola, the platform aims to make urban mobility more affordable and driver-friendly.

Operated by Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Limited, Bharat Taxi is not directly run by the government but follows a driver-owned cooperative model inspired by institutions like Amul. Drivers, known as “Sarathis,” hold shares in the cooperative and do not pay per-ride commissions. Instead, they are charged a fixed daily app usage fee of Rs 30, giving them greater control over earnings and operations.

According to the Ministry of Cooperation, the zero-commission structure could make fares up to 30% cheaper for passengers. The app claims to have over 4 lakh registered drivers and includes safety measures such as a dedicated helpline, driver verification, and 35 complaint-handling booths set up with support from the Delhi Police. The initiative is being pitched as a more citizen-centric and equitable model for India’s ride-hailing market.
