Back From China, 6-Year-Old, Her Mother Test Covid Positive In Tamil Nadu

A mother and her 6-year-old daughter tested positive for COVID-19 at the Madurai airport in Tamil Nadu, according to a senior health official on Wednesday. The pair had just returned from China through Colombo.

The mother and daughter from Virudhunagar, a town close to Madurai, underwent an RT-PCR test when they arrived at the airport on Tuesday, and the results showed coronavirus, the official said. Both people in Virudhunagar are being kept at home alone. The state lab would receive their samples and do whole genome sequencing on them.

Tamil Nadu reported 10 positive cases on Tuesday, but there were still 51 ongoing cases. The rapid increase in coronavirus cases in China and other nations prompted the Tamil Nadu government to step up screening of all travellers arriving at the state’s four airports.

Inspecting a COVID-19 mock drill on Tuesday at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai, state health minister Ma Subramanian stated that the government is well prepared to handle the outbreak, if any.
