At 5.3 Degree Celsius, Delhi Records Season’s Lowest Temperature

Parts of Delhi were covered in a thin layer of fog this morning, which cut visibility to 500 metres as the city saw its coldest morning of the year with a low of 5.3 degrees Celsius.

A representative for the railways reported that the fog caused delays in 21 trains ranging from 1.30 to 4.30 hours. The highest temperature this winter, which dipped a degree below average to 20.1 degrees Celsius, was also the lowest. According to the India Meteorological Department, the Safdarjung Observatory, the main weather station in the city, reported the minimum temperature at 5.3 degrees Celsius, three notches below the season’s average (IMD).

The season’s lowest temperature to date has been this one.  The weather service has forecast mostly clear skies on Saturday with some morning fog.

According to the IMD, the temperature will range between 20 and 5 degrees Celsius at its highest and lowest points. At 5.30 am, the Palam airport recorded the lowest visibility level of 200 metres. At 5.30 am, the IMD reported that visibility at the Safdarjung airport had decreased to 500 metres.

The IMD defines very deep fog as visibility between 0 and 50 metres, dense fog as between 51 and 200 metres, moderate fog as between 201 and 500 metres, and shallow fog as between 501 and 1,000 metres.
