Asaduddin Owaisi Slams Demolition: “UP Chief Minister Has Become…”

Asaduddin Owaisi, the leader of the AIMIM, slammed Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday for demolishing the home of the main accused in the Prayagraj violence, saying he was acting like the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court.
“The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court. Is he going to convict anyone and demolish their homes?, “While speaking at a rally in Gujarat’s Kutch, Mr Owaisi posed the question.

In the midst of heavy police deployment, the Prayagraj Development Authority (PDA) demolished the house of Javed Mohammed, alias Pump, the alleged mastermind of the June 10 violence in Prayagraj, on Sunday.

The accused is the father of activist Afreen Fatima and a leader of the Welfare Party of India. Ms Fatima took part in last year’s protests against the controversial Citizenship Law enacted by the central government. Her role in this week’s violence is also being investigated, according to the police.

The accused allegedly had illegal weapons and offensive posters at his home, according to police. Before the demolition, a search was conducted at his home on Sunday morning.

“We discovered a 12 bore illegal pistol, a 315 bore illegal pistol, cartridges, and some documents with objectionable comments against the honourable court,” said Ajay Kumar, Prayagraj’s Senior Superintendent of Police.

Mr Mohammed has been arrested and is being interrogated in connection with the violence, according to officials.

The demolition occurred just hours after a notice claiming illegal construction on the ground and first floors was posted outside his home. He had also failed to respond to a demolition order sent to him in May, according to the notice.

Mr Mohammed was given until June 9 to have the illegal construction demolished, after which he was given a final notice to vacate the house by 11 a.m. on June 12. Demolitions were also carried out in Kanpur, where on June 3 there were violent clashes and stone-throwing over the same issue. Over 300 people have been arrested in Uttar Pradesh in connection with the protests and violence, with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath warning of “strictest” action against those attempting to destabilise the situation.
