Apple Seeks Court Relief to Block India Antitrust Body From Accessing Global Financials
Apple has approached the Delhi High Court seeking to restrain India’s antitrust regulator from demanding its global financial records amid an ongoing investigation into the company’s App Store practices. According to court filings cited by Reuters, Apple argues that the Competition Commission of India (CCI) should pause the probe while the company challenges the validity of India’s penalty rules under competition law.
The dispute stems from a CCI investigation that accused Apple of abusing its dominant position in the App Store ecosystem, allegations the iPhone maker has denied. Apple has warned that if the regulator calculates penalties based on its worldwide turnover, potential fines could reach as high as $38 billion. The company has already challenged the 2024 penalty framework in court, a case that remains pending.
Despite this, the CCI issued a private order on December 31 seeking Apple’s financial details. In a January 15 filing, Apple urged the court to direct the watchdog to halt any coercive action and suspend the investigation for now, arguing that compliance would undermine its legal challenge. The Delhi High Court is scheduled to hear the matter on January 27.
