Amul pays tribute to former Japanese PM Shinzo Abe in its latest topical

Shinzo Abe, a former Japanese prime minister, was shot at a public event and tragically passed away at a hospital on Friday. The killing of the leader shocked the entire globe, as tributes flooded social media. Amul also joined in to show respect.

In the western city of Nara, Abe, 67, was giving a campaign address when a shooter opened fire multiple times. Prior to passing out during a political gathering, Abe suffered injuries to his left chest and neck, according to Reuters.

The death of Abe, who led Japan for the longest period of time until stepping down in 2020, was mourned by world leaders. Through a cartoon featuring the leader and the Amul girl, the dairy brand also showed respect. The image depicts the girl kneeling to the politician while Japan’s famous Mount Fiji is seen in the background. She is wearing a kimono.

The brand inscribed “Abe ke liye Alvida (Bye for now)” in the topical.

Fumio Kishida, the prime minister of Japan, condemned the “barbaric conduct” and halted his election campaign on Friday. Both leaders were actively campaigning ahead of Sunday’s elections for the upper house of Japan.

In Japan, where there are 125 million people, a high-profile shooting like the one that killed a former prime minister is unusual; only 10 gun-related criminal cases were reported there last year, according to the Japanese police department after the tragedy.

Tetsuya Yamagami was the assailant, who was quickly apprehended. He allegedly told police he wanted to kill the former prime minister because he was “dissatisfied” with him. He said that he “did not detest Abe’s political convictions,” though.
