Ahmedabad Uses AI and Facial Recognition to Track Stray Cattle
Ahmedabad has launched a pilot project using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to tackle traffic disruptions and safety hazards caused by stray cattle. Municipal authorities are now employing a deep learning model to identify and track cows in real time, building on the city’s existing CCTV infrastructure and the AI Centre of Excellence established under Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.
The AI system identifies individual cows by scanning unique biometric markers, such as their noses, which are as distinctive as human fingerprints, along with facial features like stains or marks near the eyes. This complements the 1.1 lakh cows already fitted with RFID tags and microchips, enabling the city to automate monitoring and reduce the manual effort required for tracking and controlling stray cattle.
If successful, the initiative could streamline traffic management, enhance public safety, and allow authorities to trace cattle owners more efficiently, reducing repeat offenses. The model will soon be presented to a steering committee for evaluation, with the potential for citywide deployment to predict and prevent cattle-related issues in urban areas.
