Adani Seeks Dismissal of U.S. Criminal Case After Prosecutors Step Back
Indian billionaire Gautam Adani has asked a U.S. federal judge to formally dismiss criminal charges filed against him, after the U.S. Department of Justice announced last month that it would no longer pursue the prosecution. The case, filed in 2024, accused Adani of participating in a bribery scheme involving Indian government officials to secure approvals for a solar energy project.
In a letter submitted to U.S. District Judge Nicholas Garaufis in Brooklyn, Adani’s lawyer Robert Giuffra argued that the allegations fall outside the jurisdiction of U.S. law and that prosecutors would be unable to prove the alleged bribery activities in India. Adani Group has consistently denied all wrongdoing related to the case.
The judge must approve the dismissal before the charges can be officially dropped. Giuffra stated that the Justice Department’s decision followed months of discussions between prosecutors and defense lawyers. He also requested the dismissal of related civil charges by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, after Adani and his nephew Sagar Adani agreed to settle the SEC case by paying a combined $18 million.
