Adani Power Forms Nuclear-Focused Unit as India Opens Sector to Private Players

India’s Adani Power (ADAN.NS) on Thursday announced the formation of a new subsidiary, Adani Atomic Energy Ltd, marking one of the first public disclosures by a privately held utility of its interest in the country’s newly opened nuclear energy sector. The company said the unit will generate, transmit and distribute electricity derived from nuclear energy sources, though it did not provide further operational or financial details.

The move comes as India accelerates efforts to expand clean energy capacity to meet rising power demand and reduce carbon emissions. The federal government has begun allowing greater private participation in the nuclear power segment, historically dominated by state-run entities, as part of a broader strategy to significantly scale up nuclear generation capacity over the coming decades.

At present, the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) owns and operates the country’s nuclear power plants, with a total installed capacity of about 8.8 gigawatts. Interest from private utilities appears to be building, with Tata Power’s (TTPW.NS) chief executive stating last week that the company is evaluating three potential sites for nuclear projects, signaling a potential shift in India’s traditionally state-controlled atomic energy landscape.
