India’s Fast-Track Route for Low-Risk Foreign Investors Draws 164 Registrations in 100 Days
India’s new fast-track investment route for trusted foreign investors has attracted 164 registrations in just over 100 days, according to data from the National Securities Depository. The SWAGAT-FI framework, introduced on June 1, is designed to simplify registration and compliance for low-risk foreign portfolio investors.
The scheme covers investors such as sovereign wealth funds, pension funds, insurance companies and regulated public retail funds, which together account for around 70% of foreign investment in India. The framework also extends FPI registration from three years to 10 years, reducing renewal requirements and compliance costs for long-term investors.
Early registrations include investment structures linked to major asset managers such as BlackRock, Vanguard, State Street and Franklin Templeton, along with South Korean and Malaysian government-related funds. Foreign investors added a net 702 billion rupees ($7.34 billion) to Indian equities through August, although they withdrew 278.1 billion rupees during September so far.
