OpenAI Warns of Autonomous AI Risks, Calls for Global Safety Rules
OpenAI has warned about the risks of fully autonomous AI systems capable of recursive self-improvement (RSI), saying such systems should not be pursued without adequate safeguards and human oversight. The company said AI could potentially advance faster than humans can understand or supervise if self-improvement capabilities develop without sufficient controls.
In a blog post titled “Building standards for the next phase of AI,” OpenAI outlined its goals for advanced AI, including developing AI researchers, expanding scientific and economic benefits, and providing personalised AI systems. It stressed that maintaining human control should remain central as AI capabilities progress.
OpenAI also called for international standards and global cooperation on frontier AI safety. The company said common standards could establish shared definitions, technical safeguards and evidence requirements while avoiding fragmented national regulations. It urged discussions to cover both open and closed AI models.
