India Escalates Probe Into Apple’s Software Warranty Terms
India’s consumer regulator has escalated its investigation into Apple’s software warranty terms following complaints that the iOS 18 update caused problems including green, pink and white lines on iPhone screens, as well as microphone and display issues. The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has ordered a detailed investigation into whether consumers were unfairly forced to pay high repair costs for problems allegedly linked to the software update.
Apple has denied the allegations, saying it found no systemic issues or safety concerns with iOS 18 in India. In an August response, the company argued that its software is provided without warranty and that such terms are consistent with industry practices. Apple also said users are informed of the terms before installing software and compared its approach with other major electronics companies.
The investigation could have wider implications for Apple if authorities find violations of consumer rights. The regulator has raised concerns over consumers being charged large amounts for display replacements, with repairs for an iPhone 15 screen estimated at around ₹27,900. Apple’s iPhone market share in India has also grown significantly, reaching about 9% in 2025 compared with 4% in 2022.
