Wipro’s AI Push Frees Capacity Equivalent to 20,000 Workers
Wipro’s artificial intelligence initiatives have improved productivity equivalent to the output of around 20,000 employees, according to the company’s Chief Technology Officer Sandhya Arun. Rather than replacing those workers, the freed capacity has been redeployed across other projects and roles as Wipro moves towards a “human-AI operating model.”
The Indian IT giant, which had around 243,000 employees as of June, has trained and certified more than 100,000 employees in advanced AI skills. Wipro is also expanding its forward-deployed engineering workforce, with Arun indicating that its scale is expected to be broadly in line with competitors such as Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys, which are also building teams to help clients adopt AI.
The shift comes as India’s $315 billion IT services industry undergoes major changes driven by AI, affecting hiring, software development and client contracts. Arun said the focus should move beyond productivity gains to measurable business outcomes, including better customer experiences, new revenue opportunities and stronger business performance. Analysts note that while Wipro’s AI investment is comparable with major peers, the company still has room to mature its AI commercialisation and convert these investments into revenue and margin growth.
