India to Ban Imports Made With Forced Labour

India has announced a ban on the import of goods produced using forced labour, introducing a new measure aimed at strengthening trade regulations and addressing international concerns. According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Commerce, the central government will have the authority to prohibit the import of products found to be manufactured wholly or partly through forced labour.

Under the new framework, India’s foreign trade authority will investigate whether imported goods involve forced labour. If sufficient evidence is found, it will recommend banning those imports after consultations with the government. The notification is set to come into effect 30 days after its issuance.

The move comes as the United States considers imposing higher tariffs on several countries, including India, over concerns related to forced labour and industrial practices. While most Indian exports currently face a 10% U.S. tariff, proposed investigations could result in additional duties, making the new policy a significant step in aligning India’s trade practices with global standards.
