India’s First Hydrogen Train Clears Final 120 kmph Trial
India’s first hydrogen-powered train has successfully completed its final high-speed trial at 120 kmph on the Jind–Sonipat section of Northern Railway in Haryana. The successful test marks a major milestone for Indian Railways and brings the country closer to launching hydrogen-powered passenger train services after the remaining regulatory and operational approvals are completed.
The Jind–Sonipat route was chosen as the pilot corridor for testing the new technology under real operating conditions. To support the project, Indian Railways has developed dedicated hydrogen production, storage and refuelling facilities at Jind. The train is also equipped with advanced safety features, including hydrogen leak detectors, flame detection systems and continuous monitoring technology.
The hydrogen train is part of Indian Railways’ broader push to reduce carbon emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. Powered by hydrogen fuel-cell technology, the train generates electricity through a reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, producing only water vapour as a by-product. With the successful trial, India joins a select group of nations advancing hydrogen-powered rail transport as a cleaner and more sustainable alternative.
