Hyderabad Renames Key Road as ‘Donald Trump Avenue’, Sparking Political Row
A major road in Hyderabad has been renamed “Donald Trump Avenue,” triggering a political controversy between India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress party. The road, located near the U.S. Consulate and offices of major American technology companies such as Microsoft, Google, and Amazon, was officially renamed by the Congress-led Telangana government.
The BJP criticized the move, calling it hypocritical. Party spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla questioned why Congress leaders continue to criticize U.S. President Donald Trump over issues affecting India, including tariffs and foreign policy, while simultaneously honoring him with a road named in his recognition. The decision has also faced opposition from other political groups, including the Communist Party of India (Marxist), which demanded that the renaming be reversed.
Congress defended the move, saying it reflects Hyderabad’s growing importance in strengthening India-U.S. relations and its role as a global technology hub. The renaming comes amid strained ties between Washington and New Delhi during Trump’s second term, although both Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently agreed to advance negotiations on a bilateral trade agreement during their meeting at the G7 Summit in France.
