Delhi Gymkhana Club Faces Exit Battle
One of India’s oldest and most exclusive clubs, the Delhi Gymkhana Club, is facing possible closure after the government ordered it to vacate its prime New Delhi property. Established in 1913, the club sits near the prime minister’s residence and is known for its sprawling lawns, heritage buildings, and elite membership.
The government said the land is needed for security and infrastructure purposes, while club members and employees have challenged the move in court. A petition filed in the Delhi High Court argues that authorities are trying to take over a century-old institution within just 15 days without proper process.
The dispute has sparked a wider debate online about privilege and public land use. Critics questioned why elite clubs should enjoy subsidised spaces, while supporters defended the club as part of the city’s cultural and social heritage.
