Founder of Viral Indian Gen Z Satirical Account Alleges Government Takedown and Threats

The founder of the viral satirical social media group “Cockroach Janta Party” (CJP), Abhijeet Dipke, has alleged a coordinated government crackdown involving website takedowns, account suspensions, and personal threats. Focusing on the concerns of India’s Gen Z, the account amassed over 22 million Instagram followers in just a few days by highlighting critical issues such as youth unemployment and recurring exam paper leaks under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. Dipke stated on X that their official website was taken down, their X account was withheld within India, their Instagram account was compromised, and his family received threats. While digital rights group the Internet Freedom Foundation criticized the alleged blocking as an arbitrary attempt to suppress free speech, India’s home and IT ministries did not respond to requests for comment, and Reuters could not independently verify the claims.

The sudden surge in the account’s popularity highlights deep-seated economic anxieties among younger Indians, contrasting with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) recent electoral victories in key states. A survey by polling agency CVoter revealed that over 60% of respondents aged 18 to 24 feel anxious about their future, with six in ten aligning with the frustrations over governance and joblessness spotlighted by CJP. This anxiety is reinforced by official data placing urban youth unemployment at 14%—nearly triple the country’s overall 5% unemployment rate—as well as recent scandals like a medical entrance exam paper leak that disrupted 2.3 million candidates. Furthermore, a majority of the survey’s respondents stated that any state-level action to block such a platform would be unjustified.

The viral phenomenon drew a sharp dismissive response from federal minister and senior BJP leader Kiren Rijiju, who questioned the authenticity of the group’s followers and suggested they originated from outside the country. Without naming CJP directly, Rijiju posted on X that the “heroes of the anti-India gang cannot be heroes of India,” prompting Dipke to counter with a demographic analysis showing that over 94% of his Instagram audience is located within India. As the online tension escalates, activist and lawyer Prashant Bhushan noted that for the digital movement to sustain its momentum and make a lasting impact, its organizers will ultimately need to mobilize and organize physical protests on the ground.
