Novo Nordisk Bets Big on AI to Speed Up Drug Launches
Novo Nordisk is ramping up its use of artificial intelligence to dramatically reduce the time needed to launch new drugs, as the Danish pharmaceutical giant looks to strengthen its position in the fast-growing obesity treatment market. Speaking at a Reuters summit in Bengaluru, senior executive John Dawber said AI is helping cut months from the traditionally lengthy process between clinical trial completion and regulatory filing.
The company is using AI across multiple stages of drug development and commercialization, including drafting regulatory documents, analyzing safety data, and supporting commercial planning. Novo Nordisk believes these technologies could significantly accelerate drug development timelines, aligning with broader industry expectations that machine learning will reshape pharmaceutical research and operations over the next few years.
India is emerging as a major hub in Novo Nordisk’s global operations, with its Bengaluru center handling key responsibilities tied to international drug launches, including the company’s recently introduced oral obesity pill in the U.S. While the company continues to expand its AI-led capabilities in India, Dawber said hiring will remain measured, with the focus shifting toward building specialized talent rather than aggressively increasing workforce numbers.
