Workday to Maintain India Hiring Pace and Deepen AI Investments, Executive Says
Enterprise software maker Workday plans to sustain its rapid workforce expansion in India as the company ramps up investments in artificial intelligence and prepares to open new offices. Sunil Jose, president of Workday India, confirmed that hiring will continue at the same pace that recently saw the company’s local headcount more than double over a 12-to-14-month period to approximately 1,300 employees. Already operating in Mumbai and two other cities, the human resources and financial management software provider aims to expand its physical footprint into New Delhi and Bengaluru, leveraging India’s vast pool of skilled tech talent and its status as a hub for global capability centers.
While specific financial figures were not disclosed, Workday is deeply focusing its investments on artificial intelligence across both its internal operations and consumer-facing products. According to Jose, enterprise clients are increasingly deploying Workday’s AI agents across payroll, hiring, finance, and expense management to automate repetitive tasks. These automated workflows are allowing companies to accelerate nearly two-thirds of traditionally time-consuming tasks, with one unnamed global retailer successfully utilizing the technology to slash its hiring times by 70%.
The strategic push into advanced AI and data skills comes at a time when global centers in India are aggressively recruiting for generative AI and automation roles. This localized talent surge coincides with broader market anxieties, as software and services stocks have recently faced a slump due to concerns that emerging AI tools could disrupt traditional business models. Currently, Workday serves more than 1,800 customers in India out of 11,500 globally, a roster that includes major multinational brands such as Target, Netflix, and Nvidia.
