Maruti Suzuki Shares Rally on Strong Demand Outlook Despite Profit Miss
Shares of Maruti Suzuki India surged 4.6% on Wednesday as investors brushed aside near-term margin pressures and focused on robust demand prospects, particularly for its small cars. The stock marked its best session in three weeks, providing the biggest boost to both the NIFTY Auto Index and the Nifty 50, which gained 2.5% and 1.1%, respectively. The rally came despite the company reporting a quarterly profit of ₹35.91 billion for the period ending March 31, falling short of analysts’ estimates of ₹41.38 billion.
The earnings miss was primarily attributed to higher raw material costs and a sharp decline in other income. However, the company highlighted strong demand momentum, with Chairman RC Bhargava noting that small cars account for approximately 130,000 out of 190,000 pending orders. Maruti Suzuki also announced plans to expand its manufacturing capacity by around 500,000 units in the current fiscal year, backed by an investment of $1.48 billion, signaling confidence in long-term growth.
Analysts largely viewed the results as resilient, citing a strong order book, lean dealer inventories, and easing discounts as indicators of sustained demand. Firms like S&P Global Mobility and CLSA pointed to stable underlying demand despite cost pressures, while BofA Global Research and HSBC cautioned that elevated commodity prices and expansion costs could weigh on margins in the near term. Although the stock has declined 19.3% so far this year—making it the worst performer on the auto index—investors appear optimistic about volume growth even as profitability remains under pressure.
