Diet Coke Shortage in India as Iran War Disrupts Can Supply
India is facing a shortage of Diet Coke as supply chains are disrupted by the ongoing Iran conflict. The beverage, sold exclusively in aluminium cans in the country, has been hit by delays in shipments from the Gulf region, a key hub for aluminium production affected by restrictions around the Strait of Hormuz.
The shortage has forced Coca-Cola to ration supplies, with distributors reporting unfulfilled orders and limited stock availability. While overall demand for low-sugar beverages remains strong in India, logistical disruptions and rising production costs have constrained supply, with some consignments of imported cans delayed and domestic manufacturing becoming more expensive due to energy shortages.
Retailers are now witnessing slower deliveries, pushing alternatives like bottled Coke Zero to fill the gap. The situation highlights the vulnerability of global supply chains to geopolitical tensions, as India—one of Coca-Cola’s key growth markets—grapples with reduced availability of a popular sugar-free drink, sparking reactions and memes among consumers online.
