India’s Brides Turn to Mounjaro for Pre-Wedding Weight Loss
In India, weight-loss injections like Eli Lilly’s Mounjaro and Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy are becoming part of pre-wedding preparation, as brides and some grooms seek rapid results. Clinics are marketing “Mounjaro bride” packages that combine guided nutrition, workouts, and injections, highlighting societal pressures to look a certain way on the big day. Doctors report that over 20% of inquiries for obesity drugs come from soon-to-be brides, though medical eligibility is strictly considered.
The Indian obesity drug market, launched last year, has seen rapid growth, with Mounjaro sales doubling post-launch and forecasts predicting a market of over $850 million by 2030. Local drugmakers have introduced cheaper alternatives, raising concerns about potential misuse and unsupervised use, as regulators warn these medications are intended for medically eligible adults with obesity-related health conditions.
Brides using these drugs cite convenience and societal pressures as motivations, often discontinuing treatment after weddings. While some report significant weight loss, doctors emphasize the importance of lifestyle changes for sustainable results. Cases of body-shaming and pressure from prospective families continue to drive demand for quick weight-loss solutions before marriage.
