Indian IT Stocks Tumble as AI Fears Trigger $50 Billion Rout
Indian IT shares plunged this week, heading for their steepest decline since March 2020, as concerns over artificial intelligence disrupting the sector wiped out roughly $50 billion in market value. The Nifty IT index dropped as much as 5.2% on Friday before trimming losses to about 1.7% by early afternoon, taking its weekly fall to 9.4%. The sell-off followed a tech-led slump on Wall Street, where worries about shrinking margins at major firms pushed investors toward safer assets ahead of key U.S. inflation data.
Market anxiety intensified after the recent launch of an AI tool by startup Anthropic, which sparked fears that rapid advances in generative AI could reshape India’s $283 billion IT services industry. Analysts warned that clients may divert technology budgets toward AI-driven solutions, potentially hurting traditional outsourcing revenues. Major Indian IT firms were dragged lower, with Tata Consultancy Services falling 2.4%, Infosys down 2.2%, and HCLTech declining 1.2% during Friday’s session.
Despite the sharp sell-off, some experts say the long-term outlook may not be entirely negative. Portfolio managers and analysts note that AI also presents significant opportunities if companies adapt quickly and clearly communicate their strategies. J.P. Morgan cautioned that it is overly simplistic to assume AI will replace enterprise IT services entirely, emphasizing that complex corporate systems will still require extensive integration, customization, and support—areas where IT service providers remain essential.
