Trump Tariff Cut Boosts India Trade Outlook
U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to reduce tariffs on Indian imports from 50% to 18% has sparked optimism across India’s markets, lifting investor and exporter sentiment despite limited details of the agreement. The tariff cut is part of a broader trade understanding between the two nations, reportedly linked to India reducing Russian oil purchases and lowering certain trade barriers. The announcement triggered a rally in Indian equities, while the rupee posted its strongest single-day gain in years.
Under the agreement, India is expected to increase imports of U.S. petroleum, defence equipment and aircraft, while partially opening its agriculture sector and reducing tariffs on imported vehicles. Indian officials also indicated that the country could allow zero tariffs on selected U.S. industrial goods. Trade Minister Piyush Goyal stated that a joint statement outlining the final agreement details will be released once both countries complete formal discussions.
Economists believe the tariff reduction will strengthen India’s export competitiveness, particularly benefiting sectors such as gems and jewellery, leather, plastics, ceramics and auto components. While the deal is expected to boost bilateral trade, challenges remain as Indian refiners require time to wind down Russian oil imports. Analysts warn that an abrupt halt could disrupt supply chains and increase inflation, given India’s heavy reliance on imported crude oil.
