RBI Slashes Repo Rate to 5.5%; FD Investors Brace for Lower Returns
In a move aimed at boosting economic activity, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) cut the repo rate by 50 basis points to 5.5% during its third monetary policy review of FY 2025–26. This marks the third consecutive rate cut by the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) this year, following two 25 bps reductions in February and April. The decision is expected to ease borrowing costs across sectors but could spell lower returns for fixed deposit (FD) holders.
Banks have already begun lowering interest rates on FDs, a trend that began with earlier rate cuts. According to SBI Research, deposit rates have dropped by 30 to 70 basis points since February 2025. Experts caution that while FD rates may not fall overnight, the downward trend is clear, especially for short- and medium-term tenures. Limited-period high-interest FD schemes are also being withdrawn or revised.
Financial advisors recommend investors consider locking in current FD rates—some still offering around 7.5%—particularly for senior citizens who receive additional interest. Alternatives such as corporate bonds, debt mutual funds, and hybrid investment options are gaining attention for their better post-tax returns. Techniques like FD laddering, diversifying portfolios, and reviewing tax-efficient options like the Senior Citizen Savings Scheme (SCSS) are being encouraged to protect returns in a softening interest rate environment.
