Amid Row, Tamil Nadu Assembly Thanks Governor For Speech, But With “Agony”

Thiru. N. Eramakrishnan, a Tamil Nadu MLA, on Wednesday presented a “Motion of Thanks” on Governor R. N. Ravi’s speech, mentioning his “agony” over his action on January 9.

“…That this House records its agony for the act of Hon. Govenor by omitting and including some portions in the Governor’s Address which was sent by the Tamil Nadu Government, approved by the Hon. Governor and circulated in the Assembly: That the Members of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly are grateful to the Hon. Governor for the Address, recorded in the House on the 9th January, 2023,” the motion of thanks read.

The Governor caused a stir on January 9 when he suggested that the name “Thamizhagam” would be more fitting for the state.

On Monday, at the House’s opening session, Governor Ravi made a comment that caused a stir, especially among the Treasury benches. Congress and VCK lawmakers, who are friends of the ruling DMK, began yelling insults at the governor and staged a walkout.

The Governor was also criticised by DMK MLAs who chanted, “Don’t impose BJP, RSS philosophy.”

However, sources stated that DMK Chief Minister and President MK Stalin on Tuesday asked his MLAs not to make any offensive remarks about the Governor.

According to additional sources, Stalin also requested that the MLAs refrain from putting up any signs criticising the Governor.
