Delhi Wakes Up To Dense Fog As Cold Wave Batters North India

This morning, Delhi awoke to chilly temperatures as its streets were covered in a thick fog that reduced visibility to a minimum.
As a cold wave moved through north India this morning, the temperature in the capital city lingered at 7 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature was roughly 3 degrees below average and at its lowest point for the season. Conditions of dense to very dense fog were observed in some areas of Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and Uttarakhand.

Drivers in Delhi moved gingerly through the fog cover while keeping their danger lights on. Delhi is expected to experience severe weather today, according to the India Meteorological Department.

“Cold Day/Severe Cold Day Conditions very likely in some parts over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and West Rajasthan and cold day conditions in isolated pockets over Uttarakhand on 26th and 27th December 2022,” the IMD had said in a bulletin at 3.30 pm yesterday.

“Due to prevailing light wind and high moisture in lower tropospheric levels, Dense to Very Dense Fog very likely to continue over some parts of Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi and West Rajasthan during the next 48 hours,” the IMD said.

The category for Delhi’s air quality is still “extremely poor.”  Flights not equipped for low visibility operations may be impacted as landings and takeoffs continue, Delhi airport authorities warned in an early morning statement.

The government has recommended travellers to contact their service providers for the most recent updates to the flight itinerary.
