On the national language issue, Sonu Nigam disagrees with Ajay Devgn, asking, “Baaki deshon se pange kam hain jo apne desh mein…”
After reacting to actor Kiccha Sudeep’s statement about Hindi no longer being a “national language,” actor Ajay Devgn sparked a debate. Many actors and filmmakers took part in the discussion, including Manoj Bajpayee, Ram Gopal Varma, and Hansal Mehta. Sonu Nigam, the National Award-winning singer, is the latest member of the film industry to weigh in on the topic.
“Nowhere in the constitution does it say that Hindi is our national language,” Sonu Nigam said at a recent event moderated by journalist Sushant Mehta. It may be the most widely spoken language, but it is not the official language of the country. Tamil is, in fact, the oldest language. Between Sanskrit and Tamil, there is a debate. However, some claim that Tamil is the world’s oldest language.”
Nigam stated that there are already enough issues that need to be resolved with other countries, and that starting a new problem within the country is futile. “‘Abhi tumhaare baaki deshon se pange kam hain jo tum apne desh mein kar rahe ho?” he inquired. (Aren’t we having enough problems with other countries without starting one here?) “What is the point of this debate?”
Nobody should be told what language to speak, according to the singer. “Punjabis can converse in Punjabi, Tamilians can converse in Tamil, and if they prefer, they can converse in English.” What is this ‘humein Hindi bolna chahiye’? All of our court decisions are written in English. English has become a part of our culture, according to Sonu Nigam. “Let us not further divide our country; there is already so much going on,” he said at the end of his statement.
