Glacier Outburst at Uttarakhand results in massive destruction

The Glacial outburst at Uttarakhand yesterday has shaken the state again when a part of the Nanda Devi glacier broke-off at the Chamoli district. The vast flooding at the Dhauli Ganga, Rishi Ganga and Alaknanda rivers has created grave destruction to the state. At least 15 people have been declared dead due to the disaster caused by the glacier outburst and around 200 people are still said to be missing.

The NTPC ‘s Vishnugad Hydel Project and the Rishi Ganga Hydel Project were extensively effected and researchers noted that around 800 million people depend on the seasonal runoff from Himalayan glaciers for drinking water, irrigation and hydropower.

It was helpful for the rescue teams sent to the disaster site to work efficiently as the weather was bright and sunny, unlike the 2013 Kedarnath flood that was more grave due to heavy rains. PM Modi has announced Rs 2 lakhs as the relief fund to be given to the families affected by the disaster. The Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat has also said that Rs 4 lakhs will be given to the next of kin for those who lost their lives at the disaster.
