‘MSP’ is better than ‘farm loan waivers’, says architect of Green Revolution

In an interview published in one of the leading national newspapers of our country, the ‘Father of Green Revolution’, Mankombu Sambasivan Swaminathan, has been quoted as saying that the policy of giving higher ‘Minimum Support Price’ would not create as much financial burden as the policy of providing loan waivers.
In the recent past, many state government such as Uttar Pradesh offered huge loan waivers to their farmers.
None of these state governments have pledged to give higher MSP to their farmers, indicating that those ruling the states are only interested to gain short term relief and are not thoughtful enough to provide long term benefit to the farmers. There have been reports that had the then UPA government implemented the Swaminathan Commission Report submitted in the year 2006, the country would have witnessed an astounding growth in the farming sector.
In the interview, the architect of green revolution has been quoted as saying all governments, which has been ruling the country since the year in which he submitted the recommendation, have conveniently cited various reasons for not executing the recommendation. It is learned that the biggest vision of this International administrator, who led many International organisations such as the International Rice Research Institute and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, is to take the country to the ambitious stage of sustainable development using the environmentally sustainable agriculture, sustainable food security and the preservation of biodiversity.
