Recently the Finance Minister had stated that the service charges that some restaurants bill on the customers do not reach the government coffins. He had stated that some of the restaurants, hotels or eateries charge the customers apart for the food and beverages are also charging them with service charges and that they are being kept by them. Some of the consumers also believe that these service charges collected are for the restaurant authorities
on behalf of the government. The ministry also stated that the service charge for the food served by a restaurant having air-conditioners is 5.6 percent of the total amount charged in the bill. The Finance Minister has raised the service charges from 12.36 percent to 14 percent. When the service charge stood at 12.36 percent then the effective rate was 4.96 percent of the total bill amount.
