147 Auctioned Commercial Coal Blocks to Generate ₹47,500 Crore Annual Revenue: Ministry
The coal ministry on Monday said the 147 commercial coal blocks auctioned across nine states since 2020 are expected to generate around ₹47,500 crore in annual revenue, attract ₹55,000 crore in capital investment, and create approximately 490,000 jobs. The ministry said revenue from allocated commercial mines, including upfront and premium payments, stood at ₹3,090 crore in FY26.
The ministry said the revenue-sharing model, which combines competitively bid revenue share with royalty, District Mineral Foundation (DMF), National Mineral Exploration Trust (NMET) contributions and GST, has helped nearly triple states’ coal revenue over the past decade. It added that the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act 2026 establishes a uniform fiscal framework and restricts states from imposing fresh taxes on mineral rights and mineral-bearing lands except under conditions prescribed by the Centre.
Commercial coal mine auctions were launched in June 2020 after the Supreme Court cancelled 204 coal block allocations in 2014. According to the ministry, 44 new companies have won coal mines under the auction regime, while commercial coal output rose from 12.55 million tonnes in FY24 to 23.51 million tonnes in FY25. Captive and commercial coal blocks together produced around 210 million tonnes in FY26, it said.
