NTPC Seeks Overseas Buyers for Green Ammonia and Low-Carbon Fuels

India’s largest power producer, NTPC, is in discussions with potential buyers in Japan, South Korea and Germany for green ammonia and other low-carbon fuels, Chairman Gurdeep Singh said on Tuesday. The company is developing a proposed green hydrogen hub in Andhra Pradesh as India seeks to strengthen its position in the global clean energy market and turn hydrogen-related ambitions into commercially viable businesses.

The proposed project is expected to produce green ammonia and green methanol, which are considered more practical than hydrogen for transportation and international trade. Singh said the focus must shift from pilot projects to commercially sustainable ventures, highlighting the importance of securing long-term purchase agreements to support large-scale investments in green energy production.

India aims to produce 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030, backed by approximately $2.1 billion in government subsidies. Demand for green fuels is expected to increase as industries seek alternatives to fossil fuels to reduce emissions and meet decarbonisation targets. NTPC’s efforts to secure international buyers reflect the growing importance of export markets in supporting India’s clean energy ambitions.
