Odisha Warns Miners, Steel Firms Over Iron Ore Grade Manipulation
Odisha, India’s largest iron ore-producing state, has warned mining companies and steel manufacturers of strict action over alleged iron ore grade manipulation and misdeclaration. State inspections reportedly found discrepancies that could have resulted in significant revenue losses, prompting authorities to tighten oversight across the sector.
The companies named in the government’s communication include Tata Steel, JSW Steel, Steel Authority of India (SAIL), Jindal Steel, and ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India. Tata Steel denied any irregularities, stating that it complies with royalty norms, while other companies either declined to comment or did not respond.
Industry experts say stricter inspections have already reduced the availability of lower-grade iron ore in the market. Analysts warn that if the crackdown intensifies, it could disrupt domestic iron ore supplies and affect India’s steel production targets.
