India Summons Meta Over Restricted Modi Facebook Post
The Indian government has summoned senior executives from Meta after Facebook briefly restricted a post shared by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has asked the company to explain how the incident occurred, despite Meta stating that the restriction was accidental.
According to ministry secretary S. Krishnan, Meta has informed Indian authorities that it has introduced new protocols for handling the accounts of prominent public figures to prevent similar incidents in the future. The company has not yet issued an additional public response to the latest government action.
The restricted post was a video message uploaded by Modi on Instagram and later shared on Facebook, marking his first address on the student protests that led to the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The episode is the latest in a series of content-related disputes between the Indian government and major technology companies. India remains Facebook’s largest market by number of users.
