Australia, India Sign Uranium Export Deal During Modi Visit

Australia and India have signed a new agreement allowing the export of Australian uranium for India’s civilian nuclear energy sector during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Melbourne. The deal also strengthens cooperation in renewable energy, critical minerals, and green hydrogen, supporting India’s goal of expanding its nuclear power capacity to 100 gigawatts by 2047. The agreement ensures the uranium will be used only for peaceful energy generation.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described India as a close partner and said the agreement would boost clean energy while creating new opportunities for Australia’s resources sector. Modi highlighted the “historic opportunities” for collaboration and invited Australian businesses to make long-term investments in India’s infrastructure, energy transition, and low-carbon industries. Australia’s largest pension fund, AustralianSuper, also announced an additional A$500 million investment in India’s National Investment and Infrastructure Fund.

The visit also underscored the growing strategic relationship between the two nations. Albanese called Modi a “living bridge” between Australia and India, reflecting the strong people-to-people ties between the countries. While thousands of supporters gathered in Melbourne for Modi’s community event, a small anti-immigration protest took place under heavy police security. Modi will continue his overseas tour with a visit to New Zealand after concluding his Australia trip.
