Quad Ministers Meet in New Delhi to Tackle Supply Chain Choke Points and Global Conflicts

Top diplomats from the Quad nations—Australia, India, Japan, and the United States—met in New Delhi on Tuesday to address pressing global supply chain vulnerabilities and infrastructure gaps. Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar opened the session by urging the strategic bloc to confront “connectivity choke points,” resource concentration, and critical infrastructure deficiencies. The meeting marks the third gathering of the nations’ foreign ministers since September 2024, emphasizing a collective effort to shift the alliance from a discussion forum into a platform for concrete regional action.

A central focus of the discussions involves navigating severe disruptions to the global economy and energy markets caused by the ongoing war with Iran, which has led to the closure of the strategic Strait of Hormuz. With the United States and Iran currently negotiating a potential deal to end their three-month conflict and reopen the crucial waterway, the Quad ministers are heavily weighing the geopolitical impacts of the crisis. Japan, in particular, is pushing to diversify its critical mineral supplies following previous trade halts by Beijing, further underscoring the urgent need for resilient supply chains amid active global conflicts.

Beyond immediate economic choke points, the alliance remains anchored by shared concerns over China’s expanding military presence and economic influence in the Indo-Pacific. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stressed the importance of maintaining a “free and open Indo-Pacific” through enhanced maritime security, while diplomats work toward organizing a formal Quad leaders’ summit later this year. Despite Beijing’s criticism of the group as a Cold War-style construct, member states continue to prioritize maritime information sharing and defense stability across the South and East China Seas.
