India Approves First Mini/MicroLED Fab Amid Questions Over Crystal Matrix’s Readiness
India has approved its first commercial Mini and MicroLED display manufacturing facility under the India Semiconductor Mission, with Hyderabad-based Crystal Matrix Ltd set to establish the plant in Dholera, Gujarat. The facility will use Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology to manufacture advanced display panels for products such as smartwatches, AR/VR devices, automotive displays and premium televisions. The project is expected to produce 72,000 square metres of display panels and 24,000 RGB wafer sets annually.
Despite the ambitious plan, Crystal Matrix’s financial filings have raised questions about its ability to execute such a large-scale semiconductor project. The company reported just Rs 1.07 crore in FY25 revenue and disclosed minimal fixed assets, with no visible semiconductor fabrication infrastructure or cleanroom equipment on its balance sheet. However, the company has partnered with South Korean firms Lumens and Soft-Epi, while also bringing in experienced advisors from Bharat Electronics, Samsung and semiconductor manufacturing backgrounds.
Industry experts say the project could still position India strongly in the emerging MicroLED market, which remains at an early global stage. Analysts believe India’s entry into GaN-based display manufacturing could help build long-term capabilities in LEDs, photonics and power semiconductors. Still, experts caution that commercial success will depend heavily on technology execution, manufacturing yields and the ability to scale production against established global competitors.
