Hindustan Unilever Counters Cost Pressures with Price Hikes Amid Profit Surge
Hindustan Unilever Limited reported an 18% rise in quarterly profit, driven by strategic cost-cutting and price increases to offset rising commodity and currency volatility linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. CEO Priya Nair stated that fluctuating crude prices and currency movements have impacted input costs, prompting the company to balance pricing strategies, savings, and advertising investments to manage short-term pressures.
Despite the strong earnings performance, shares of Hindustan Unilever declined nearly 3%, making it one of the top losers on the Nifty 50 in a generally weak market session. The broader FMCG sector is facing similar challenges, with companies like Bisleri International and AWL Agri Business also implementing price hikes to protect margins amid rising raw material costs.
For the quarter ended March 31, the company posted a profit of ₹29.30 billion and revenue growth of 7% to ₹155.99 billion, supported largely by its home-care segment featuring brands like Comfort and Vim. Looking ahead, Hindustan Unilever remains optimistic about its medium-term margins and expects improved performance by fiscal 2027, focusing on premium products and key growth drivers such as its Horlicks protein drink. Meanwhile, competitors like Nestlé India have also reported strong earnings, signaling resilient consumer demand despite ongoing economic headwinds.
