India Boosts Fertiliser Subsidy Amid Rising Global Prices

India has increased its nutrient-based fertiliser subsidy for the summer crop season by 11.6% to ₹415.34 billion to protect farmers from rising global prices triggered by the U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran. The government aims to keep fertiliser prices stable, ensuring farmers can continue to purchase essential inputs like DAP at the current rate of ₹1,350 per 50-kg bag.

The decision comes as global fertiliser prices surged nearly 20% due to supply disruptions in the Middle East, a key supplier region for India. Farming remains a crucial sector in the country, and the subsidy is intended to maintain affordability and support agricultural productivity during the summer sowing season.

India relies heavily on imports of urea, DAP, and other fertilisers from countries including Saudi Arabia, Oman, Russia, China, and Morocco. To strengthen domestic supply, the government has also issued a tender to import 2.5 million metric tons of urea, aiming to stabilize the market and ensure uninterrupted availability for farmers.
