Railways to Allow Ticket Cancellation from Any Station Nationwide
Indian Railways will soon allow passengers to cancel counter tickets from any railway station across the country, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced as part of a series of passenger-friendly reforms. Previously, travellers had to visit the same station where the ticket was booked, often causing inconvenience. The new system aims to simplify cancellations and improve accessibility for passengers nationwide.
The Railways has also removed the requirement of filing a Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR) for e-tickets, enabling automatic refund processing after cancellation. In another major change, passengers will now be able to upgrade their travel class up to 30 minutes before departure, extending flexibility beyond the earlier limit tied to reservation chart preparation. These measures form part of a broader overhaul of ticketing rules designed to enhance convenience and reduce manual procedures.
To tackle ticket misuse, Indian Railways has introduced technology-driven measures to curb fraud and black marketing in the Tatkal booking system, including Aadhaar-based OTP verification and bot detection tools. Nearly 3 crore fake IRCTC accounts have been removed following data analysis. Additionally, revised cancellation windows — now set at 72, 24, and 8 hours before departure — and earlier chart preparation timelines are expected to improve ticket availability and help passengers plan travel more efficiently without extra costs.
